5 Steps to Being Healthy and Fit for Life

Let’s be real: how many times have you started a new fitness regimen or dieta and fell off the wagon as soon as you took a bite from one of the pastelillo trays being passed around at your tia’s house? As a fitness professional myself, I can’t even count on both hands the number of times this has been my scenario! Are you tired of trying to make lifestyle changes without seeing any results? I feel you. You see, the problem isn’t that you don’t have enough willpower or don’t want it enough. The truth is that you may have to change how you set your goals.

After 10 years of yo-yo dieting, over exercising, not exercising and over eating, I’ve found that achieving your healthiest life really comes down to five steps...and they don’t revolve around fad diets.

1. Eat Well...

Most of the time! Eating healthy doesn’t have to be restrictive. It comes down to balance. Before you begin a diet, ask yourself why you are doing this. If your goal isn’t to be a body builder— why would you eat like one? Personally, my goal is to nourish my body with whole foods at least 85% of the time. The smaller percentage is left for high quality indulgences. A good rule is to stay away from processed foods.

2. Train for Your Mind

Working out to look good is great (hello, J-LO!) but don’t let that be the only reason you exercise. Getting your sweat on regularly increases confidence, happiness and general happiness. It also helps keep anxiety and depression at bay. One day we will be viejitas and I don’t know about you, but I want to be vibrant and full of life until my old age.

3. Love Yourself

A lot of women I’ve met say that this is hard to do. I’ve felt the same way too at times, but you know what? Whatever reason(s) you have created to let yourself believe this is hard, LET THAT GO! Negative thoughts about oneself can become an automatic practice. Telling yourself you aren’t worthy, flaca, or smart enough isn’t going to move your meter forward. Instead change that inner dialogue. Approaching a healthy lifestyle as something you HAVE to do, makes it seem like punishment. Instead look at eating well and working out as something you GET to do because you LOVE YOURSELF!

4. Create the Joy in Your Life

Do things that make you happy and keep you in the present moment. Way too often we live our lives staring at a screen while life is happening around us. Take time off from logging on to social media. Meet with friends, have conversations, laugh, enjoy your food. Life is what we make of it. Practice gratitude and be humble.

Practice, practice, practice steps 1-4. 24/7. 365 days a year.
